The Korean War and compelled capitalism has given Koreans a lesson that survival of myself and my family is the first precious value and the others are either my friends or my opponents. Korea hasn’t had enough time to raise a positive citizenship which imply that respect to others, even if they are unknown people, can be returned toward myself or our group in anyway. I know this opinion is just a subjective view and can arise controversial issue between Koreans. But, I don’t want to argue this matter further on this place. Right now, what I am keeping my eyes on is just one expressions, “I’m sorry.”As you know well, all language represent the mind structure of people who shares same language. So, I want to examine first the original meaning of “I’m sorry” and the way it is commonly used between Koreans. There was a good example of word misuse for Koreans. In the famous novel and the same named movie <Love Story>, well-known maxim was appeared.
